Events production of La Cage (also known as ‘The Birdcage’) has been all the talk since the new year where everyone’s been anticipating watching the comedic hi-jinx of one of their most favourited 1990’s comedies. For many, The Birdcage (1995 staring comedian Robin Williams) holds a very near and dear place in their hearts as it didn’t only speak to comedy movie lovers, but also to a generation who didn’t anticipate the success of the movie that had been inspired by the musical La Cage Aux Folles.
Let’s rewind back to 1995 and take a look at what makes this production so special to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Many can remember living and growing up in the 1990’s as many parts of society had been blossoming with both acceptance and newfound knowledge of their worldly surroundings with the emerging internet, not to mention 24-hour news networks. It was a time that accelerated the media culture of who we are today, what we stand for, and the values we hold close to us.
So why are we talking about the media here anyways? Well, simply put… the 1995 box-office hit ‘The Birdcage’ smashed ratings for a reason as it soared over its competition out of nowhere. Both comedians Robin Williams and Nathan Lane gave a show-stopping performance on screen and it had even the harshest of critics raving over it! The Birdcage wasn’t only a hilarious movie in its own right, it gave the audience of North America something they haven’t seen before, and at the same time it started a much needed conversation about acceptance in families, relationships and community. In todays world many can relate to acceptance in any role we have in society as we mainly look for acceptance from our family, peers and so forth.
La Cage Aux Folles tells the story of George, the owner of a glitzy drag nightclub, and Albin, the star attraction. When their son, Jean-Michel, brings home his new fiancee and her ultra-conservative parents, the limits of family, love and mascara are tested. TaDa! Events, known for its elaborate productions, brings the full glitter of a Parisian showbar to the St. John’s stage, then flips the action to reveal the backstage madness behind the feathers and the fans. With a star studded cast of singers, dancers, actors, musicians and some of the City’s most glamorous drag queens to bring the story together, La Cage Aux Folles is hilarious and heartwarming fun for the whole family.
